Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has declared that his government will adopt a zero-tolerance approach against anyone found guilty of exploiting Sanatan values or misusing the faith of devotees. His remarks came a day after Uttar Pradesh Police arrested eight individuals in connection with the alleged embezzlement of donations collected at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The arrests followed the registration of an FIR based on the preliminary findings of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which was constituted to investigate allegations of financial irregularities in temple donations.
Addressing a public gathering in Deoria, the Chief Minister said the government had acted immediately after receiving the SIT report and reiterated that there would be no compromise when it comes to protecting the sanctity of Ayodhya and the trust of millions of devotees. He recalled his June 19 visit to Ayodhya, where he had assured people that any attempt to misuse public faith or damage the temple's reputation would invite strict legal action.
Government Stresses Swift Action and Accountability
Yogi Adityanath said the administration wasted no time after the SIT submitted its findings and emphasised that matters of faith cannot be treated lightly. According to him, Ayodhya represents the spiritual identity of millions of people, making it essential to ensure complete transparency and accountability in the management of temple donations. He also criticised individuals attempting to politicise the issue, alleging that some of the same political leaders had previously questioned the existence of Lord Ram and opposed the Ram Janmabhoomi movement.
The Chief Minister reiterated that preserving the dignity of religious institutions remains one of the government's highest priorities and assured that anyone found guilty during the investigation would face legal consequences irrespective of their position.
Political War of Words Intensifies
Launching a sharp attack on opposition parties, Yogi Adityanath accused them of using the controversy for political gains. Without naming specific leaders, he alleged that parties which had opposed the construction of the Ram Temple were now attempting to question the government's handling of the investigation. He further claimed that previous governments had imposed restrictions on Hindu religious events such as Ram Navami, Shri Krishna Janmashtami, Kanwar Yatra and Durga Puja while encouraging corruption and weakening public institutions.
The Chief Minister's remarks came in response to criticism from Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, who had questioned the investigation process and alleged that only lower-level employees would be punished while influential individuals might escape accountability. The exchange has further intensified the political debate surrounding the high-profile investigation.
SIT Probe Reveals Operational Lapses
The SIT investigation has reportedly uncovered several weaknesses in the temple's donation management system. According to sources, investigators found deficiencies in cash handling procedures, CCTV surveillance, employee verification, movement control inside the temple premises and protocols governing the transfer of donations to trust offices and banks. Officials are also examining recruitment practices involving workers engaged through private agencies, along with documentation related to gold, silver and other valuables donated by devotees.
The FIR in the case was registered on the complaint of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust trustee Krishna Mohan. Eight individuals, including Avinash Shukla, Anukalp Mishra, Lavkush Mishra, Manish Kumar Yadav, Karunesh Pandey, Ramashankar Mishra, Subhash Srivastava and Ram Shankar Yadav alias Tinnu, have been arrested. The case includes charges under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to theft, criminal breach of trust, conspiracy and corruption offences.
As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to scrutinise additional financial records and determine whether more individuals were involved in the alleged embezzlement. The outcome of the SIT probe is likely to have significant legal, administrative and political implications while reinforcing demands for greater transparency in the management of religious institutions across the country.
