Shubman Gill Leads by Example in Duleep Trophy, Sunil Gavaskar Praises His Dedication

Shubman Gill, India’s Test captain, has proven his commitment to the game by choosing to lead North Zone in the 2025-26 Duleep Trophy. Despite having just completed a physically demanding five-match Test series against England, where he scored an impressive 754 runs, second only to Sunil Gavaskar’s record, Gill is setting an example for his fellow cricketers by opting to play in domestic tournaments.

This decision comes after the BCCI mandated that players participate in domestic events when no international matches are scheduled, following India’s disappointing loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The move aims to strengthen the domestic circuit and ensure that top cricketers like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who hadn’t participated in domestic tournaments for years, return to domestic competitions such as the Ranji Trophy.

Former captain Sunil Gavaskar expressed his admiration for Gill’s decision, noting that it sends a positive message to other players. Gavaskar highlighted that it would have been easy for Gill to rest after a grueling tour, but instead, he is choosing to stay active and provide leadership in the Duleep Trophy. Gill's commitment is a timely reminder of the importance of domestic cricket in building a strong foundation for Indian cricket's future.

Gill’s participation in the Duleep Trophy adds a significant boost to the tournament, with other cricketers expected to follow suit. With the start of the 2025-26 season, the tournament will witness intense competition, and Gill's leadership of the North Zone side will undoubtedly add excitement. The opening match is scheduled for August 28 in Bengaluru, where North Zone will face East Zone. Should Gill be selected for the Asia Cup squad, he will leave the tournament after playing a match for North Zone. As India prepares for its upcoming international commitments, including the Asia Cup in September, Shubman Gill’s leadership, both on and off the field, is becoming a beacon of inspiration for younger players and cricket enthusiasts alike.
