Georgetown, Texas — A powerful display of patriotism and community spirit filled the San Gabriel Park on Sunday as the city opened its annual Field of Honor, marking the start of Veterans Day week. The opening ceremony drew residents, families, and veterans to celebrate and remember those who have served and sacrificed for the nation.
Now in its ninth year, the Georgetown Field of Honor has grown into one of Central Texas’s most recognizable Veterans Day traditions. This year’s display features 2,000 full-size American flags arranged in perfect rows across the green expanse of the park, each dedicated to a veteran, active-duty service member, or first responder. The sight of the fluttering flags — red, white, and blue stretching as far as the eye can see — stands as a moving reminder of courage, commitment, and unity.
The event, organized by the Rotary Club of Georgetown in partnership with local veterans’ groups, allows individuals to purchase a flag for $45 in honor or memory of someone who has served. Each flag carries a tag with the honoree’s name, creating a personal connection between visitors and the stories behind each banner. Proceeds from the event support local nonprofit organizations that provide assistance to veterans and first responders, ensuring that the tribute extends far beyond the park grounds.
Event organizer Michael Cox described the tremendous growth and impact of the Field of Honor over the years. “It started with about 1,200 flags, and now we’re up to 2,000,” Cox said. “So far, we’ve given away more than $250,000 in nine years to local 501(c)(3) organizations that support veterans and first responders. We feel like we’re making a little dent in helping them all out.”
Cox explained that the display is more than a visual tribute; it’s an emotional experience for everyone who visits. “When you stand here and all you can see is a sea of red, white, and blue, it hits you,” he said. “You feel it in your heart — the pride of living in this great country and the gratitude for those who defend it.”
Throughout the week, San Gabriel Park will host a series of community events honoring veterans and public safety personnel. Highlights include musical performances, educational exhibits, and a special Veterans Day ceremony on Tuesday, where local officials and military representatives will address the crowd. Visitors can walk through the field at any time to reflect, take photos, or pay their respects.
The event’s growth mirrors the community’s deep appreciation for its service members. Residents from across Georgetown and neighboring cities participate each year, purchasing flags not only for family members but also for strangers, ensuring that every veteran and first responder feels recognized. The field has become a gathering place for reflection and gratitude, drawing people of all ages to pause and remember.
The Field of Honor also serves as an educational opportunity for younger generations, teaching children the meaning of service and sacrifice. Parents often bring their families to share stories about relatives who served, creating a living bridge between the past and the present.
City officials praised the organizers for their commitment to preserving the event’s legacy. The Georgetown Fire Department and local veterans’ organizations assist with setting up and maintaining the field, while community volunteers help manage flag sales and guide visitors.
The display will remain open to the public through next weekend, allowing visitors to experience the solemn beauty of the tribute. As dusk falls each evening, the flags catch the soft glow of the setting sun, turning San Gabriel Park into a field of light and color — a reminder that the values of honor, service, and sacrifice continue to shine brightly in Georgetown.
For many, the Field of Honor represents not just remembrance, but renewal — a reaffirmation of the bond between community and country. Through the dedication of volunteers and the generosity of residents, Georgetown continues to show that gratitude, like the flags themselves, stands tall and unwavering.
