Five people were taken to area hospitals late Christmas night after a three-vehicle crash on Indian Head Highway in Accokeek, Maryland, according to officials from the Prince George’s County Fire and EMS Department. Firefighters said the injured individuals suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries following the collision, which occurred along the 14250 block of the highway.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Christmas Day, after reports of a major traffic incident involving multiple vehicles. Upon arrival, firefighters found three cars damaged as a result of the crash, with several occupants requiring immediate medical attention. Officials said two of the five victims were trapped inside their vehicles and had to be extricated using specialized rescue equipment.
Fire and EMS personnel worked at the scene for an extended period to stabilize the injured, safely remove those who were trapped, and secure the roadway. The department later provided details of the rescue operation through a social media update roughly two hours after crews were first dispatched. All five victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, though authorities emphasized that none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
The crash was one of several emergency incidents handled by Prince George’s County firefighters over the course of Christmas night. In addition to the Accokeek collision, crews responded to a townhouse fire in Laurel at around 8:30 p.m. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze, and no injuries were reported in that incident.
Later in the evening, just before midnight, emergency responders were called to a separate residential fire in Lanham. That incident involved a fire on the first floor of a home. Crews quickly extinguished the flames, and officials confirmed that no residents or firefighters were injured.
Authorities have not released details about what may have caused the crash on Indian Head Highway, and it remains unclear whether speed, weather conditions, or other factors played a role. The roadway is a major thoroughfare in the area and has seen a number of traffic incidents in the past, particularly during late-night hours and holiday periods when travel patterns change.
Officials continue to urge drivers to exercise caution, especially during holidays when roads may be busier and emergency response times can be impacted by multiple simultaneous incidents. The Prince George’s County Fire and EMS Department noted that Christmas night required responses to several serious calls, highlighting the importance of safe driving and fire safety during the holiday season.
The investigation into the Accokeek crash remains ongoing, and additional information may be released as authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
