AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami has called for respect for the late M G Ramachandran (MGR), rejecting comparisons between the actor-politician and current actor-politician Vijay. Speaking at a rally in Tamil Nadu, Palaniswami emphasized that MGR should not be compared with Vijay, who heads the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). He stressed that MGR was regarded as a "god" by AIADMK supporters, not only for his political leadership but also for his humanitarian work.
Palaniswami highlighted MGR’s selflessness, noting that the late Chief Minister used the money he earned from acting to serve the people, including donating his property to a home for the deaf and mute after his passing. He called MGR an exemplary leader, contrasting him with Vijay, who is still in the early stages of his political journey.
While acknowledging that anyone can enter politics in a democracy, Palaniswami argued that politicians must live up to the expectations of the people. Drawing from his own experiences as Chief Minister, he recounted the many challenges he faced, from natural disasters to the pandemic, and claimed to have provided governance that prioritized the welfare of the people without causing hardship.
He also took a jab at Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, claiming that dignity and discipline were essential when criticizing others in politics. Palaniswami reiterated that the AIADMK follows the political legacy of MGR and J Jayalalithaa, emphasizing the party’s commitment to the people’s welfare. The rally crowd responded with thunderous applause, echoing their respect for MGR’s legacy and the AIADMK’s approach to governance.
