Asha Bhosle’s golden voice fades into eternity, echoing through time

Legendary Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2026, in Mumbai, India, at the age of 92, marking the end of an extraordinary era in global music. She had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday, April 11, 2026, after experiencing cardiac and respiratory complications and was placed in intensive care later that night.

Her son, Anand Bhosle, confirmed her passing on Sunday afternoon. The family announced that her last rites would be conducted on Monday, April 13, 2026, in Mumbai.

Born in 1933 into the renowned Mangeshkar family, Bhosle began her musical journey at the age of nine and went on to become one of the most prolific and versatile voices in Indian cinema. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, she recorded thousands of songs across multiple languages, shaping the soundscape of Hindi cinema and earning admiration worldwide.

Often compared to her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle carved a unique identity through her adaptability and expressive range. From energetic dance numbers to deeply emotive ghazals, her artistry transcended genres. Her work in the critically acclaimed film Umrao Jaan remains one of her most celebrated contributions, showcasing her mastery over classical and semi-classical styles.

Throughout her illustrious career, she received numerous accolades, including seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer and two National Film Awards, cementing her place among the greatest vocalists in music history.

Beyond her professional life, Bhosle’s personal journey reflected resilience and strength. After an early marriage that ended in separation, she later married acclaimed composer Rahul Dev Barman in 1980. Their creative partnership produced several timeless compositions that continue to resonate with audiences.

In her later years, she remained closely connected to her family, especially her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle, who was a constant companion.

Asha Bhosle’s passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the world of music. Yet, her voice—rich, expressive, and enduring—will continue to inspire generations, ensuring that her legacy lives on far beyond her lifetime.
