Rath yatra in Toronto disrupted by egg-throwing incident, India calls it regrettable

A recent rath yatra procession held in Toronto has sparked diplomatic concern after a video surfaced online allegedly showing eggs thrown at the religious gathering. The incident, which occurred during the annual chariot procession dedicated to Lord Jagannath, has prompted India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to issue a formal response, describing the act as “regrettable” and urging Canadian authorities to take appropriate action against those involved.

In a statement, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We have seen reports regarding disruption created by mischievous elements during the rath yatra procession in Toronto. Such despicable acts are regrettable and are against the spirit of the festival, which seeks to promote unity, inclusivity, and social harmony.” The Ministry confirmed that the matter has been “strongly taken up” with Canadian authorities and expressed hope that the Canadian government will act promptly to protect the religious rights of individuals and communities.

The rath yatra, an important Hindu festival celebrated globally, involves the ceremonial pulling of chariots bearing deities, accompanied by singing, dancing, and chanting. In Toronto, the event draws a large number of devotees every year and is seen as a celebration of cultural diversity and public devotion.

This year, however, the mood was disrupted when a video clip shared by Instagram user Sangna Bajaj, a participant in the procession, appeared to show broken eggs scattered across the path of the chariot. In the video, Bajaj can be seen singing devotional songs as the procession moves peacefully through a quieter stretch of the route. The presence of the eggs, reportedly thrown by unknown individuals, was interpreted by many as an intentional act of disrespect.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or physical confrontation, but the symbolic nature of the act has triggered disappointment and concern among community members and officials. Religious and community leaders have called for calm and a lawful response while reiterating the need for tolerance in multicultural settings.

The Indian government’s appeal to Canada emphasizes the broader importance of protecting religious freedoms, especially during public celebrations that hold deep significance for diaspora communities. Jaiswal added, “We hope the Canadian government will take necessary action to protect the religious rights of people.”

The incident is part of a wider backdrop of concerns expressed by Hindu communities in Canada in recent months. Several cases of vandalism targeting Hindu temples and symbols have been reported, raising questions about whether enough is being done to ensure the safety and dignity of minority faiths.

Local authorities in Toronto have not yet issued a detailed statement on the incident, but investigations are believed to be underway. Meanwhile, community organizations have urged those who were present at the scene or who have additional video evidence to cooperate with law enforcement.

Observers of India-Canada relations note that while such events do not represent the overall relationship between the countries or their people, they have the potential to cause friction, especially when incidents are perceived as part of a recurring pattern. Both sides have previously highlighted the value of multiculturalism and peaceful coexistence, and this event has reinforced the importance of upholding those principles on the ground.

Participants in the rath yatra have continued to share photos and videos of the event’s more joyful moments, highlighting the positive spirit of the community despite the disruption. For many, the core of the festival — unity, service, and spiritual celebration — remains unshaken, even in the face of adversity.
