Mass transit agencies across the tri-state area have announced special service schedules for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with adjustments aimed at accommodating holiday celebrations while maintaining essential transportation access. Riders are advised to plan ahead and review schedules carefully, as service levels will vary by mode and day.
In New York City, subway service will largely operate on a regular schedule on New Year’s Eve, with additional overnight service on several major lines to support late-night travel. Increased service will be provided past midnight on multiple numbered and lettered routes, including key lines serving Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. The A train will operate express service until approximately 2:30 a.m., offering faster trips for late-night riders. On New Year’s Day, subway service will transition to a Sunday schedule across the system.
Bus service will also be adjusted for the holiday period. On New Year’s Eve, bus routes in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx will operate on a reduced weekday schedule. On New Year’s Day, buses in all five boroughs will follow a Sunday schedule. Officials urge bus riders to allow extra time and confirm routes in advance, particularly in areas affected by holiday events and street closures.
Access-A-Ride service will continue to operate 24 hours a day on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. However, officials caution that holiday traffic conditions and street restrictions may affect pickup and drop-off locations. Customers are encouraged to remain flexible and plan for possible delays.
Commuter rail service will also see expanded and modified operations. The Long Island Rail Road will add 11 extra trains on New Year’s Eve across several branches, including Babylon, Montauk, Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson, and Port Washington, with service to both Penn Station and Grand Central Madison. Enhanced evening service is designed to support riders traveling into New York City for celebrations. Customers are encouraged to check real-time updates using official transit apps and alerts.
Metro-North Railroad will operate special weekday schedules during the holiday period. On New Year’s Eve, additional late-evening and post-midnight trains will run into the early hours of New Year’s Day. On New Year’s Day, hourly service will be available on the Hudson and Harlem lines, with extra trains on the New Haven line. Other branch lines will operate on regular weekend schedules. West of Hudson services will follow weekday schedules through New Year’s Eve, with added late-night service, before switching to a weekend schedule on New Year’s Day.
NJ Transit will implement a modified weekday schedule on New Year’s Eve for Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line trains, including added late-morning service and some canceled rush-hour trains. Additional service will operate into New York and Hoboken during the afternoon and evening hours, with overnight adjustments affecting certain late-night departures. On New Year’s Day, train service will operate on a regular weekend or major holiday schedule after early morning hours.
PATH service will also be adjusted, with select stations operating around the clock through early January. On New Year’s Day, PATH trains will follow a modified Saturday schedule. Riders are encouraged to consult official schedules for specific station details.
Ferry service operated by NY Waterway will run on a modified schedule on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with normal weekday and weekend service resuming later in the week. As part of a holiday promotion, children under the age of 12 can ride free through January 4.
Transit officials across the region stress the importance of checking schedules, allowing extra travel time, and staying informed about service changes throughout the holiday period to ensure a safe and smooth start to the new year.
