The tragic cruise boat accident at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur has taken a more devastating turn, with the death toll rising to 11 after two young children were found dead on Saturday. The incident has triggered widespread concern over safety standards and operational negligence in boating services managed by the state.
According to officials, the bodies of two boys—identified as Viraj Soni, aged 6, and Tamil, aged 5—were recovered during ongoing search operations. Authorities are still working to confirm identities through family verification, while some individuals, including a child and relatives, remain missing.
The boat, reportedly operated under the state tourism department, capsized on Thursday evening during a sudden storm. At least 41 passengers were confirmed to be on board, with 28 rescued alive. However, discrepancies in CCTV footage suggest that the actual number may have been higher, raising serious questions about passenger tracking and safety compliance.
Survivors have alleged that basic safety protocols were not followed, including delayed or absent distribution of life jackets. These claims have intensified criticism of authorities and brought attention to the lack of preparedness in handling emergency situations.
Rescue operations are being carried out on a massive scale, involving over 200 personnel, including teams from the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, and Army divers brought in from Agra. Despite challenging weather conditions, search efforts have expanded to a five-kilometre radius in deep waters.
In response, the Madhya Pradesh government has ordered an inquiry into the incident, dismissed three crew members, and imposed a ban on similar boats across the state. Officials have also indicated that a formal FIR will be filed as part of the investigation.
