Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai has on Friday officially resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party, bringing to an end the days of intense speculation over his political future. His resignation, accepted by BJP state in-charge Nitin Nabin on June 5, 2026, comes amid speculation that he may launch a new political outfit in the state. During his tenure as Tamil Nadu BJP president, Annamalai emerged as one of the party’s most prominent faces in the state. A former IPS officer, he was known for his aggressive campaigning style, direct attacks on political rivals, and extensive grassroots outreach, which energised party cadres and expanded BJP’s visibility across Tamil Nadu. Under his leadership, the BJP’s vote share saw a historic rise from 3.6 percent in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections to 11.2 percent in 2024, its highest ever in the state. Despite the surge, the party could not open its account, and Annamalai himself lost the high-profile Coimbatore contest.
In April 2025, Annamalai was replaced as Tamil Nadu BJP president by Nainar Nagendran, a move widely interpreted as an effort to rebuild relations with AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami. Following this, the BJP contested the 2026 Assembly elections as a junior partner in the AIADMK-led alliance. While the alliance secured a seat, the BJP’s vote share fell sharply from over 11 percent in 2024 to below three percent in 2026, highlighting the challenges the party faces in consolidating its support in the state.
