Andhra Pradesh Plans India’s Tallest Statue in Amaravati to Honour NTR, Seeks Centre’s Approval

The Andhra Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has proposed an ambitious plan to honour the legacy of legendary actor and former CM of united Andhra Pradesh, Nandamuri Taraka Ramarao (NTR), by erecting India’s tallest statue in the state capital, Amaravati. This monumental project is expected to surpass the current tallest statue in the country — the Statue of Unity in Gujarat — which stands at 597 feet and is dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

According to early proposals, the NTR statue will not only be a massive symbol of respect and pride for the Telugu people but will also include a museum, library, and exhibition centre aimed at educating future generations about the contributions of NTR to politics, cinema, and society at large. The statue is envisioned as a cultural and historical landmark that will place Amaravati on the global map and attract tourism, much like the Statue of Unity has done for Gujarat.

NTR, one of the most iconic figures in Telugu history, was not only a superstar of the silver screen but also a revolutionary political leader. As the founder of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and a former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, he redefined regional politics and played a significant role in empowering Telugu identity and pride. Chandrababu Naidu, who is also NTR’s son-in-law, has long credited the legend as the ideological pillar of the TDP and is now determined to immortalise his legacy through this grand tribute.

Project's Political and Structural Challenges

Despite the political consensus and enthusiasm surrounding the statue project within Andhra Pradesh, the proposal faces a crucial roadblock — securing approval from the central government. Under existing Indian aviation and infrastructure norms, any statue planned to be taller than 100 meters (approximately 328 feet) must obtain clearance from the Union government, especially concerning airspace safety and potential impact on flight routes.

This regulation has previously affected other high-profile statue projects across India. In Telangana, for instance, former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao unveiled a large statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Although the state wanted the Ambedkar statue to be taller than the Statue of Unity, the central government denied permission, prompting Telangana officials to increase the height of the base (dais) instead of the statue itself to give an impression of grandeur without violating federal rules.

Similarly, the Tamil Nadu government’s long-pending proposal to install a statue of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has reportedly been delayed due to a lack of union approval. In this context, Andhra Pradesh’s proposed NTR statue, which intends to be the tallest in India, may face scrutiny at multiple bureaucratic levels before receiving the green light. The central government evaluates various factors before approving such structures — including proximity to flight paths, technical feasibility, structural integrity, and environmental impact.

While Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP currently enjoys a strong majority in the state assembly — making the legislative process for the project relatively straightforward — the final hurdle remains with the Narendra Modi-led NDA government in Delhi. As of now, there has been no official comment from central authorities on the NTR statue proposal. Nonetheless, the proposal is expected to move swiftly within the state machinery. Given NTR’s towering legacy and widespread admiration — even among political rivals such as the YSR Congress Party — the idea of erecting a monumental tribute to the late leader has received cross-party acknowledgment, though some have raised concerns about project costs and prioritisation.

Supporters argue that the statue will be more than a political symbol. If executed with proper planning, it could become a significant tourist destination, boost local employment, and stand as a reminder of Andhra Pradesh’s contribution to national leadership and culture. The proposal also comes at a time when Chandrababu Naidu is working to revitalize Amaravati’s long-delayed capital city project. With large-scale infrastructure and development initiatives expected to resume under his leadership, the NTR statue could serve as a visual and emotional centerpiece for Andhra Pradesh’s capital region. As the state awaits the centre’s decision, the people of Andhra Pradesh and the larger Telugu-speaking community are watching closely. Will this ambitious tribute be allowed to stand taller than any monument in India, or will regulatory challenges clip its wings? That answer lies in the hands of central authorities, but the intent behind the proposal is clear — to honour a towering personality with an equally towering structure.
