In a sweeping multi-agency operation on Monday, law enforcement officials from Kaufman and Dallas counties, in coordination with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), seized an estimated $4.8 million in cash, along with firearms, vehicles, and jewelry, as part of an ongoing investigation into the illegal distribution of controlled substances. The investigation centers around multiple businesses operating under the names Sky Rise and ZRD Smoke Shops, with locations spread across Mesquite, Forney, Garland, Coppell, Hutchins, and Carrollton. Authorities suspect these shops were being used as fronts for the illegal distribution of controlled substances.
While officials have confirmed that assets seized are linked to criminal activity, they have not disclosed how many individuals have been arrested. It also remains unclear whether every location of Sky Rise and ZRD is implicated in the operation. Due to the investigation’s active status, further details are currently being withheld by the Kaufman County Criminal District Attorney’s Office. In a public statement, Criminal District Attorney Erleigh Norville Wiley praised the joint effort and cooperation of multiple law enforcement agencies.
“This successful operation is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Kaufman County Street Crimes Unit, the Terrell Police Department, the Forney Police Department, the Kaufman County Precinct 2 Constables Office, and the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, who are jointly committed to working together to keep our communities safe,” said Wiley. The raid marks another example of growing scrutiny on smoke shops and similar businesses across Texas, where some have allegedly strayed into illegal operations while operating under the guise of retail.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with additional information related to the case to come forward. With millions in cash and assets now in custody, law enforcement is expected to pursue further leads in what could be one of the more substantial drug-related cases in the North Texas region in recent years. Stay tuned for updates as the Texas Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement agencies release more information following the conclusion of their investigation.
