Bucyrus Ohio Train Derailment Prompts Evacuation Over Chemical Risk

A Bucyrus Ohio train derailment prompted evacuations late Sunday, July 5, 2026, after officials warned of a possible chemical leak from a tanker car.

The Norfolk Southern derailment happened around 8:40 p.m. EDT near Whetstone Street and Auto Avenue in Bucyrus, a city in Crawford County, Ohio, according to local officials cited by WSYX. Nineteen train cars came off the tracks, including at least one tanker carrying hydrochloric acid.

Bucyrus Ohio derailment leads to precautionary evacuation

Bucyrus police, fire crews and the Crawford County Emergency Management Agency went door to door to evacuate residents within a one-mile radius of the derailment site. Officials later reduced the evacuation area to a quarter-mile radius at 11:30 p.m. EDT on Sunday, July 5, 2026, and described the evacuation as precautionary.

Authorities said there was concern that a tanker car may have been leaking hydrochloric acid and warned of a possible explosion risk. Cleveland 19 reported that officials later said no immediate threat had been declared.

No injuries reported as crews work at scene

No injuries were reported, according to local reporting citing officials. Emergency crews remained at the scene while rail crews worked to remove derailed cars and assess the area.

Bucyrus High School and City Hall opened for temporarily displaced residents, with the Red Cross assisting families. WSYX reported that roughly 10 people stayed at the high school.

Officials said Whetstone Street was expected to remain closed for about 36 hours while cleanup and removal work continued. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.

The derailment drew concern because it involved a hazardous-materials tanker near homes, forcing residents to leave as a safety precaution. The next major updates will likely focus on environmental testing, cleanup progress, rail service disruption and the investigation into what caused the Norfolk Southern cars to leave the tracks.
