Sharmila to Launch Statewide Yatra Ahead of Jagan

In a bold political move, Andhra Pradesh Congress president YS Sharmila is set to hit the ground running with a statewide Yatra beginning June 9, well ahead of any such outreach initiative by YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief and former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. This development marks a significant shift in the state's political narrative as the Congress seeks to regain lost ground and tap into the growing anti-incumbency wave against the NDA-led state government.

Unlike the traditional strategy of launching political tours close to elections, Sharmila’s early start suggests a long-term game plan to re-establish the Congress’s presence across Andhra Pradesh. Her Yatra will commence in Chittoor and wrap up in Krishna district on June 30, with stops across various key constituencies where public interaction and grassroots mobilization are planned.

What makes this Yatra noteworthy is the contrasting political posture of her half-brother and primary rival, YS Jagan. Over the past year, Jagan’s political activity has been largely subdued. Despite being the de facto opposition leader in the state, he has not mounted any significant protests, public movements, or outreach campaigns since the NDA came to power. His sporadic visits to Andhra Pradesh have been short, low-profile, and with limited public engagement.

Sharmila’s proactive approach is strategically timed. With the NDA government facing criticism over governance, inflation, and unemployment, public sentiment is ripe for opposition parties to step in. By beginning her Yatra early, Sharmila hopes to capitalize on the discontent and build momentum for the Congress, which has seen a revival of sorts in recent months.

Political observers believe that even a small erosion in YSRCP’s vote base in favor of Sharmila's Congress could be damaging for Jagan in the next election cycle. Her campaign is likely to focus on key issues like agrarian distress, price rise, lack of job creation, and regional imbalances topics that resonate deeply in the state. So far, there’s been no indication from Jagan about launching a counter-Yatra or any similar public engagement. His apparent inaction could prove costly if Sharmila successfully positions herself as the leading voice of opposition in the state. With less than a year to go before the next assembly polls, the political winds in Andhra Pradesh may be starting to shift and Sharmila seems determined to take the lead.
