NJ Transit App Update Brings GPS Tracking and Bus Upgrades

NJ Transit riders in New Jersey are getting an updated mobile app, real-time tracking upgrades and new fleet investments under a Rapid Action Plan announced by Gov. Mikie Sherrill.

The updated NJ Transit app is designed to work around a rider’s location, helping commuters find nearby service details faster and reduce dependence on outdated schedule information.

Real-Time GPS Tracking Planned for Riders

Officials said NJ Transit will expand real-time GPS tracking so riders can see train and transit movement more clearly instead of relying only on delayed estimates.

The tracking rollout is expected to take several months as equipment installation, route integration and system testing continue across the network.

New Buses, Rail Cars and Station Fixes

Sherrill’s plan also includes more than 250 new buses and 40 new rail cars by the end of the year, part of a wider effort to improve reliability, comfort and capacity for daily passengers.

Newark Penn Station is also set for upgrades, including new walkways and elevators aimed at improving accessibility and passenger flow between platforms.

Why It Matters for New Jersey Commuters

For riders who depend on NJ Transit for work, school and regional travel, the changes are meant to make trips easier to plan and less uncertain.

Officials said all 165 NJ Transit stations will be reviewed to identify needed repairs, accessibility improvements and modernization work as the agency pushes for a cleaner, safer and more reliable commuter system.
