PACIFICA, Calif. — Pacifica pier abutment damage has forced the indefinite closure of the Pacifica Municipal Pier and left the longtime Chit Chat Cafe facing an uncertain future.
City officials declared a local emergency after cracking, separation and displacement were found near the pier’s abutment, the critical area where the structure connects to the shoreline near Sharp Park Beach.
Pacifica Pier Abutment Damage Forces Closure
The damage was noticed on Thursday, June 4, 2026, when officials closed the pier for public safety and ordered a structural assessment. The city said the pier will remain closed until engineers determine whether it is safe for public use.
Built in 1973, the roughly 1,140-foot L-shaped Pacifica Municipal Pier has long been a gathering place for local anglers, crabbers, families and visitors along the San Mateo County coast. But the latest damage has raised urgent concerns about the future of one of Pacifica’s most recognizable waterfront landmarks.
Chit Chat Cafe Faces Demolition Risk
The closure also forced the shutdown of Chit Chat Cafe, a longtime business located near the damaged section of the pier. Public reports say the building may have to be demolished because of the shifting foundation and worsening structural conditions near the pier entrance.
For Pacifica residents and the fishing community, the cafe is more than a business. It has served as a daily stop for pier visitors, local workers and crabbers who depended on the waterfront area as a social and economic hub.
Emergency Funding Questions Remain
The crisis has renewed attention on Pacifica’s aging coastal infrastructure. The pier has faced repeated damage from high tides, large waves and rough surf in recent years, and earlier assessments estimated millions of dollars in repair needs.
City leaders are now seeking emergency support and repair funding while engineers assess the full extent of the damage. The outcome will affect not only the pier and cafe, but also Pacifica’s waterfront identity, local tourism and fishing community.
