Tripura Student Killed In Racial Attack Suffered Paralysis, Hospital Report Reveals

Fresh details have emerged in the death of 24-year-old Tripura student Angel Chakma, who succumbed to severe injuries sustained during a violent racial attack in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun. A medical report issued by Graphic Era Hospital has revealed the extent of the trauma he endured, including complete paralysis on the right side of his body, severe head injuries, and spinal damage.

According to the hospital’s clinical findings, Angel Chakma suffered deep lacerations on his back and the occipital region of his head, multiple abrasions on his foot, and significant spinal cord injuries. The report also noted fissures in the brain, along with a total loss of motor power and sensory function in both the upper and lower right limbs. Doctors treated him for more than 17 days, but despite intensive medical care, he succumbed to his injuries on December 26.

The incident occurred on December 9 in the Selakui police station area of Dehradun, where Angel Chakma and his brother Michael Chakma were allegedly subjected to racially abusive remarks at a roadside canteen. The verbal abuse reportedly came from a group of intoxicated men. When the brothers objected and protested against the remarks, the confrontation escalated into a violent scuffle.

Police said Angel was attacked with a sharp-edged weapon and a metal kada during the altercation. He collapsed at the scene after sustaining blows to his head and back and was immediately rushed to Graphic Era Hospital in critical condition. Ajai Singh, the Senior Superintendent of Police, stated that the attackers appeared to be intoxicated and that the situation spiraled out of control within minutes.

Following Angel Chakma’s death, his family lodged a formal complaint, prompting police to register an FIR and form a special investigation team. So far, five accused have been arrested, including two minors who have been sent to a juvenile reform home. The arrested individuals have been identified as Avnish Negi, Shaurya Rajput, Suraj Khwas, Sumit, and Ayush Baroni. One suspect remains absconding and is believed to have fled to Nepal, with police announcing a reward of Rs 25,000 for information leading to his arrest.

The incident has sparked outrage and concern over racial violence against students from the Northeast. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami described the attack as completely unacceptable and assured strict action against those responsible. Police have since added murder charges to the case, and further investigation is ongoing as authorities continue efforts to bring all accused to justice.
