The agreement was finalized Friday and is pending the completion of a successful physical examination. The contract includes opt-out clauses after both the first and second seasons, giving Bichette flexibility to re-enter free agency if he chooses. Financially, the deal is structured to pay $47 million for one season or $89 million over two seasons, should he elect to remain beyond the first year. There is no deferred money included, and the agreement grants Bichette a full no-trade provision, ensuring he retains control over his future during the term of the contract.
Bichette, a two-time All-Star shortstop, is coming off a productive 2025 campaign with the Toronto Blue Jays. He posted a .311 batting average, finishing second in the major leagues, and recorded 18 home runs and 94 RBIs across 139 games. His season included several high-profile moments, highlighted by a home run off Shohei Ohtani during Game 7 of the World Series, further underscoring his ability to perform on baseball’s biggest stage.
Despite his strong overall performance, Bichette’s season was interrupted late in the year due to an injury sustained on Sept. 6 following a collision with New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells. The injury sidelined him through the remainder of the regular season, forcing him to miss critical games as the postseason approached. He returned in time for the World Series, appearing in Game 1 against the Los Angeles Dodgers and making his first start at second base in six years, demonstrating versatility and a willingness to adapt for his team.
At just 28 years old in March, Bichette enters his prime with a track record of consistency at the plate. He has led the American League in hits twice and owns a career batting average of .294, along with 111 home runs and 437 RBIs in 748 career games. Bichette spent his entire professional career with Toronto after being selected in the second round of the 2018 draft.
