A high-profile Lamborghini crash in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur has triggered widespread controversy after police registered an FIR that does not mention the name of the alleged driver, despite videos clearly showing him stepping out of the luxury vehicle. The incident, which occurred on Sunday evening, has raised serious questions about preferential treatment, transparency in policing, and public safety, particularly when influential individuals are involved.
According to police accounts, the Lamborghini veered off the road near the Gwal Toli area and mounted the footpath, hitting pedestrians and an autorickshaw before coming to a stop. At least one pedestrian, identified as Taufiq Ahmed, sustained injuries and was rushed to hospital, where his condition is reported to be stable. Locals said the situation could have turned far more deadly given the speed and power of the vehicle involved, with several people narrowly escaping serious harm.
Soon after the crash, multiple videos surfaced on social media showing a man exiting the Lamborghini moments after the accident. Police sources later identified him as Shivam, the son of a tobacco trader. Despite this visual evidence, his name does not appear in the FIR filed in connection with the case. This omission has become the central point of public anger, with many questioning why the identity of the person seen in the footage was not formally recorded in the case documents.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Central Atul Srivastava confirmed that an FIR had been registered based on a complaint and that the vehicle was seized. However, officials have so far not provided a clear explanation for the absence of the alleged driver’s name in the FIR, even after acknowledging the existence of the video footage. Police have claimed that the driver suffered dizziness and a seizure while driving, leading to loss of control, a claim that is now under verification.
The controversy deepened after visuals from the police station emerged showing the Lamborghini being covered with a sheet inside the premises. The act, allegedly carried out under police supervision, drew sharp criticism from locals and the victim’s family. In the same visuals, private bouncers associated with the accused were seen guarding the vehicle within the police station, prompting allegations of intimidation and special treatment. Family members of the injured pedestrian alleged that the bouncers misbehaved with them in the presence of police personnel, who failed to intervene.
Police officials have stated that they are verifying the medical history of the driver to confirm claims of a seizure. Questions are also being raised about how someone allegedly prone to such medical episodes was driving a high-performance sports car on busy city roads. Meanwhile, the injured pedestrian, Taufiq Ahmed, told authorities that he was standing on the footpath when the car suddenly swerved towards him. His family has demanded strict action, citing the videos and police station visuals as evidence that the case is not being treated like a routine road accident. As scrutiny intensifies, the Kanpur Lamborghini crash has become a flashpoint in the larger debate over equality before the law and public trust in policing in Uttar Pradesh.
