Eight injured in Brooklyn shooting
At least eight people, including four children, were shot late on July 4,2026 during a family barbecue in Brooklyn’s Coney Island area, according to police details reported after the incident. Officers responded at about 10:37 p.m. near West 31st Street after receiving an emergency call about gunfire. The victims were taken to hospitals, with seven listed in stable condition and one 21-year-old woman reported in critical condition. The shooting happened as New York and the rest of the country marked Independence Day celebrations.
Children among the victims
Police said the injured children included boys aged 6, 7, 12 and 14. A 6-year-old boy was shot in the stomach, a 7-year-old boy was shot in both legs, a 12-year-old boy was shot in the leg and a 14-year-old boy was shot in the thigh. Adults were also wounded, including women aged 21 and 25 and men in their 30s. Authorities said the victims were safely transported for medical treatment as officers secured the scene and began gathering evidence.
NYPD searches for suspect
Investigators said the family was celebrating in a courtyard when an unknown man dressed in black and wearing a black ski mask approached a fence and opened fire before fleeing on foot. Police recovered a TEC-9-style firearm with an extended magazine and multiple spent shell casings at the scene. No arrests had been announced, and the motive remained under investigation.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the violence and said the city would use every available tool to respond. His remarks came as officials sought information from the public and investigators continued reviewing the shooting. The attack has renewed concerns about public safety during major holiday gatherings, especially in crowded residential areas where families and children are present. For residents, the Brooklyn shooting turned a national celebration into a scene of fear, injury and urgent police response.
