UPS additional benefits can be claimed by eligible retired Central government subscribers covered under the Unified Pension Scheme.
UPS Eligibility for Retired Central Government Employees
- A total of 25,756 retired Central government subscribers are eligible to claim additional benefits under the Unified Pension Scheme, the government has informed the Lok Sabha.
- Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary shared the figures in a written response to a parliamentary question. The benefit is available to eligible retired Central government employees covered under the UPS framework.
- The Unified Pension Scheme was introduced as an option within the National Pension System for Central government employees. Therefore, being a pensioner alone does not automatically make a person eligible. The retiree must fall within the category covered by the notified UPS eligibility rules.
- Employees or their eligible family members should verify their service records, NPS coverage, retirement details and UPS status with the relevant department before submitting a claim.
UPS Claims Received and Processed So Far
- The government said 12,258 claims for additional UPS benefits had been received as of July 9, 2026. Of these, 9,823 claims had already been processed for payment.
- This means around four out of every five applications received had been processed by the stated date. The remaining claims were yet to complete examination or payment processing.
- The Finance Ministry did not provide a specific deadline for clearing all pending applications. Pensioners whose claims remain unresolved may need to contact their former department, pay and accounts office or the authorised pension-processing authority for an update.
- Applicants should ensure that their personal information, Permanent Retirement Account Number, service history, bank account and retirement records are correct to avoid processing delays.
UPS Benefits Remain Limited to Eligible Subscribers
- The additional benefits are currently limited to eligible retired Central government subscribers under UPS. They have not been made generally available to employees covered by unrelated pension schemes, private-sector workers or pensioners outside the notified category.
- The government clarified that there is no proposal under consideration to extend similar UPS benefits to other pension schemes or sectors at present.
- This means state government employees, private-sector workers and other pensioners cannot claim these additional benefits unless they separately fall within the recognised Central government UPS framework.
- Employees should also avoid assuming that NPS membership alone guarantees payment. Eligibility depends on the applicable UPS rules and verification by the concerned government authority.
Government Clarification: What Pensioners Should Do
- Eligible retirees who have not yet submitted claims should first contact the department from which they retired and confirm whether their records identify them as eligible for additional UPS benefits.
- Those who have already applied should retain the acknowledgement, claim number and supporting documents. They should also verify that their bank and contact information remain active.
- The government’s latest figures show that thousands of claims have already been processed, but a substantial number of eligible subscribers have either not yet applied or are awaiting completion of their cases.
- For now, the update applies only to qualifying retired Central government subscribers. Pensioners should rely on official departmental communication before submitting personal or financial information and should avoid unofficial agents promising faster approval.
