City officials confirmed that the restoration work, costing approximately $1 million, is nearing completion. The project focused on rebuilding the damaged end of the pier, where large sections were torn away during severe weather. However, not all of the lost portion will be replaced. About 180 feet that disappeared in the storm will not be reconstructed, and there are currently no plans to rebuild one of the well-known restaurants that once stood at the far end of the wharf.

Construction crews are finishing work on nearly 60 feet at the seaward end of the structure. Once completed, the repaired section will restore public access while also improving safety and durability against future storms. Officials expect the work to be finished in March, with reopening scheduled soon after, although an exact date has not yet been announced.

The rebuilt area will include a new viewing feature designed to enhance the visitor experience. A roughly 10-by-10-foot opening in the deck will allow people to look directly into the waters of Monterey Bay. The location is known for its rich marine ecosystem, where sea lions, sea otters, sea stars, and mussels can often be seen close to the surface. The bay is frequently referred to as the “Serengeti of the Sea” because of its dense concentration of ocean life.

Local leaders say the reopening of the Santa Cruz Wharf is expected to bring renewed economic activity to the coastline while preserving an important piece of the region’s history. The updated structure will provide visitors with safe access, scenic views, and a closer look at the marine life that makes the area one of California’s most popular coastal destinations.
