Union Budget 2026 Impact: What Becomes Cheaper and Costlier for Indians

Union Budget 2026 was presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, marking her ninth consecutive budget and outlining the government’s commitment to inclusive growth. The budget is guided by three key kartavyas aimed at accelerating economic development while supporting the poor, underprivileged, and disadvantaged sections of society. While income tax payers were hoping for rebates or changes in standard deduction, the government chose to focus on indirect tax relief, healthcare affordability, clean energy, and manufacturing-led growth.

A major highlight of the budget is its direct impact on prices of everyday goods and essential services. Through selective customs duty exemptions and policy measures, several products are expected to become more affordable for consumers, while certain sectors will see higher costs to encourage compliance and curb speculative activity. The government also announced targeted relief for cancer patients by exempting basic customs duty on 17 essential cancer drugs, significantly reducing treatment costs. Imports for nuclear power projects have been exempted from customs duty until 2035, reinforcing India’s long-term clean energy vision.

At the same time, the budget takes a firm stance against tax evasion and financial misreporting. Penalties for income tax misreporting have been increased, and speculative trading activities have been made more expensive. These measures indicate the government’s intent to strengthen fiscal discipline while balancing welfare and growth.
