Japan earthquake hits Hokkaido, raising concerns over further tremors A strong earthquake struck Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido at 5:23 AM JST on Monday, April 27, 2026, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency and the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake, measured at magnitude 6.2 after revision, occurred in southern Hokkaido at a depth of approximately 83 kilometers. No tsunami alert was issued following the event, though authorities cautioned that the risk of similar tremors in the coming week remains elevated.

The earthquake is the latest in a series of seismic events affecting Japan, a country situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire. Officials noted that the tremor occurred less than a week after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake off northern Iwate Prefecture, which had already prompted warnings of a potential megaquake exceeding magnitude 8.0. Hours before the Hokkaido event, a magnitude 5.0 quake was also recorded in waters several hundred kilometers south of the island.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the latest quake is unlikely to have caused significant damage or posed a major threat to life due to the relatively sparse population in the affected region, located about 200 kilometers east of Sapporo. However, experts warned that areas experiencing strong shaking face increased risks of falling rocks and landslides.

Last week’s earthquake injured six people and caused noticeable swaying in high-rise buildings in Tokyo. It also generated tsunami waves measuring approximately 80 centimeters that reached a port in Iwate, with smaller waves observed across northern Japan. Following that event, Japanese authorities emphasized that the probability of additional strong earthquakes remains higher than usual.

Japan’s geographic position atop four major tectonic plates makes it one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. Authorities continue to urge residents to remain prepared and follow safety protocols during seismic events, including seeking shelter indoors under sturdy furniture, avoiding windows, and moving to open areas when outdoors.
