Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese married his partner, Jodie Haydon, in an intimate ceremony held on Saturday at the Lodge, marking the first time a sitting Australian leader has wed while in office. The event, set against the backdrop of Canberra’s official residence, brought together close family members and a select group of friends following the final parliamentary sitting day for 2025. The couple’s decision to keep the wedding private underscored their desire for a personal celebration despite the significance of the occasion in national political history.
The ceremony took place in the afternoon, attended by Albanese’s son, Nathan, and Haydon’s parents, Bill and Pauline, who walked their daughter down the aisle. The couple exchanged vows they wrote themselves before an authorised celebrant from the New South Wales Central Coast. Haydon wore a custom gown created by the Sydney-based label Romance Was Born, while the Prime Minister chose a suit tailored by MJ Bale. Music also played a central role throughout the ceremony, beginning with Ben Folds’ “The Luckiest” as Haydon made her entrance.
Several more personal touches added warmth to the celebration. Haydon’s five-year-old niece served as the flower girl, and the couple’s dog, Toto, carried the rings. The witnesses included Haydon’s brother, Patrick, and Albanese’s cousin, Helen Golden, reflecting the family-focused nature of the gathering. Among the invited guests were Treasurer Jim Chalmers, Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Finance Minister Katy Gallagher, ALP National Secretary Paul Erickson and the Prime Minister’s chief of staff, Tim Gartrell.
Following the exchange of vows, the newlyweds walked out to Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours),” signalling the joyful conclusion of the ceremony. Their first dance was set to Frank Sinatra’s classic “The Way You Look Tonight,” adding a traditional touch to an otherwise modern and understated wedding. Shortly after the event, Albanese shared a video of the moment he and Haydon walked down the aisle together, offering the public a brief glimpse of the celebration.
Congratulatory messages soon followed, including one from India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who extended warm wishes to “my good friend” Albanese and Haydon on their marriage. His note reflected the close ties between the two leaders, who have worked together on several bilateral initiatives in recent years.
Albanese and Haydon first met more than five years ago at a public function in Melbourne. Their relationship gradually became more visible as Haydon accompanied the Prime Minister to official engagements, public events and election campaigns. In February 2024, Albanese proposed on Valentine’s Day on the Lodge balcony with a bespoke engagement ring that symbolised the culmination of their long and steady partnership. Haydon also serves as the chief patron of the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, a role she has embraced alongside her public responsibilities.
This is Albanese’s second marriage. He was previously married to Carmel Tebbutt, a former deputy premier of New South Wales, before their separation in 2019 after nearly two decades together. His marriage to Haydon marks both a personal milestone and a rare moment in Australian political history, drawing public interest while remaining a deeply private celebration for the couple.
