Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder: WhatsApp Slip Traps Sonam

A chilling twist in the Meghalaya honeymoon murder case has surfaced, revealing how a seemingly minor digital misstep led to the arrest of Sonam Raghuvanshi, who, along with three contract killers, is accused of murdering her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi. The murder, allegedly premeditated and executed during their honeymoon trip, has sent shockwaves across the country.

According to police, the couple carried four mobile phones during their trip. After Raja was killed by the hired hitmen near the Wei Sawdong falls, Sonam allegedly smashed his phone and discarded the device in an effort to eliminate digital evidence. However, her attempt to cover her tracks failed due to a critical mistake.

Once back in Indore, Sonam reportedly inserted her SIM card into one of her own three mobile phones, turned on mobile data, and checked WhatsApp messages. This single action allowed police to trace her location and movements, leading to her arrest. Authorities believe this inadvertent data activation exposed her whereabouts and connected her to the crime scene.

The Meghalaya Police, in coordination with a Special Investigation Team (SIT), conducted a detailed recreation of the crime scene. Sonam, along with the three other accused, was present during the walkthrough near the Wei Sawdong falls. Investigators confirmed that all three killers used separate machetes to attack Raja and later dumped his body, while Sonam stood nearby, watching the murder unfold.

East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem stated, “We reconstructed the scene to verify everyone’s role. Sonam confessed her involvement, and we confirmed the use of two weapons. We are still searching for the second machete.”

Authorities also revealed that neither Sonam nor the hired killers had any previous connection to Meghalaya, indicating that the location was strategically chosen to avoid detection. Meanwhile, the remaining three mobile phones owned by Sonam are still missing, and search operations are underway across districts in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

The police team is stationed in Indore to question individuals linked to the suspects, hoping to uncover further details about the planning and motive behind the gruesome murder. As investigations progress, the case continues to raise disturbing questions about trust, betrayal, and the dark use of technology in orchestrating and unraveling violent crimes.
