Shubman Gill Confident Ahead of England Test Series

On the eve of his debut as India’s Test captain, Shubman Gill met the press at Headingley, Leeds, ahead of the first of five Tests against England. Calm, composed, and quietly confident, the 25-year-old exuded a sense of readiness that belied his relative inexperience in red-ball captaincy.

Gill, appointed as India's 37th Test captain, now leads a young squad without the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R. Ashwin stalwarts of India’s golden Test era. When asked how it felt to step into their shoes, he called it “the biggest honour” of his cricketing journey. “It’s something not many get to do. I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity,” he said.

With only eight of the 19 squad members having toured England previously, India enter this series as a relatively fresh unit. But Gill believes that’s a blessing. “We come in without baggage. That could make a difference,” he noted.

Gill emphasized separating leadership from his batting responsibilities. “When I go out to bat, I want to think like a batter, not a captain. That’s the way I play my best cricket,” he said, hoping to avoid the added mental weight of dual roles.

He also outlined a vision for his leadership: honest communication, clarity in roles, and building a secure, growth-oriented environment. “Rishabh [Pant] and I are aligned in mindset. We want players to feel confident in their roles,” he explained. This approach is a sharp shift from past controversies where unclear team communication led to confusion during high-stakes series. Gill seems determined to restore trust and transparency within the setup.

Asked if India will adopt an aggressive, ‘Bazball’ style of cricket against England, Gill smiled and offered a teaser. “You’ll have to wait until August to see what our style looks like,” he said, hinting that India’s approach will speak through results. What’s clearer, though, is India’s likely strategic tilt: Gill signaled the team might go with six specialist batters and a bowling-heavy lineup to ensure they can take 20 wickets a proven formula for Test success. “We’ve got a blueprint from our seniors. We know we can go anywhere and win. That’s the mindset,” he added.

When asked to compare a Test series win in England with an IPL trophy, Gill didn’t hesitate. “IPL comes every year. Winning a Test series in England? That’s once or twice in a career. Far more prestigious,” he said, reflecting his reverence for the traditional format. India begin the five-Test series against England on June 20, with matches running through August 4. The new WTC cycle begins here, and so too does a fresh chapter in Indian cricket led by a captain who prefers substance over show.
