The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade returned to the streets of New York City on Thursday, drawing large holiday crowds despite brisk temperatures and steady winds sweeping across Manhattan. The annual celebration, which remains one of the most widely recognized holiday events in the country, began on the Upper West Side and continued along its traditional route toward the iconic Macy’s flagship store on 34th Street. This year’s parade introduced several new balloons and floats, adding fresh excitement for spectators lining the route.
Among the most anticipated additions were balloons featuring Buzz Lightyear and Pac-Man, two characters whose global popularity continues to span generations. They were joined by floats inspired by Labubu, Lego creations and a large onion carriage representing eight characters from the Shrek universe. The parade also added airborne versions of Derpy Tiger and Sussie, characters from the animated world of “KPop Demon Hunters,” reflecting growing enthusiasm for global pop culture influences.
Weather conditions played a significant role in the morning’s preparations, as temperatures hovered in the 40s and wind gusts reached 25 to 30 miles per hour. Meteorologists noted that the brisk winds could make the day feel even colder for parade-goers. City officials monitored the forecast closely since regulations restrict full-size balloons from flying when sustained winds exceed 23 miles per hour or when gusts surpass 35 miles per hour. These limits were established to ensure public safety, and adjustments are made as needed depending on the conditions at launch time. Except for 1971, the balloons have rarely been grounded, though they have occasionally flown at lower altitudes due to high wind.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that authorities would assess the weather early Thursday to determine whether any modifications to the balloon heights might be required. She added that there were no specific or credible threats directed at the event, but the city had deployed thousands of officers along the route to maintain safety. The parade has attracted demonstrations in recent years, including disruptions from pro-Palestinian protesters, but officials said they were fully prepared to address any incidents that might arise.
Performances remain a hallmark of the parade, and this year’s program featured a roster of well-known artists and entertainers. Cynthia Erivo, Lainey Wilson, Conan Gray, Foreigner, Lil Jon, and performers from the fictional girl group HUNTR/X were among those scheduled to appear. Marching bands from across the country, accompanied by dancers and cheer squads, added traditional flair, while the Radio City Rockettes maintained their long-standing presence. Cast members from several Broadway productions, including “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Ragtime,” and “Just in Time,” also contributed to the morning’s entertainment.
Dozens of balloons, floats, clowns and bands formed the colorful procession that welcomed Santa Claus at the end of the route, signaling the start of the holiday season. The parade was carried live on NBC with familiar anchors hosting the broadcast, while a Spanish-language presentation aired on Telemundo. Viewers also had the option to stream the event through Peacock, extending access to audiences watching from home and abroad.
