Tamil superstar Vijay, who was recently sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after his newly formed party, TVK, became the largest in the state, found himself at the center of a public family rift. His son Sanjay, along with his estranged wife Sankgeetha and daughter Divya, did not attend the oath-taking ceremony, which raised eyebrows about their strained relationship. This absence highlighted ongoing tensions within Vijay's family, which also led to Sankgeetha filing for divorce, citing Vijay's alleged extra-marital affair with actress Trisha Krishnan.
Despite these personal challenges, Vijay has always maintained an open stance on his son Sanjay's future, particularly regarding his career choice. In a 2022 interview, Vijay spoke candidly about his son's reluctance to enter the film industry. When asked if Sanjay wanted to follow in his footsteps and become an actor, Vijay made it clear that he had never pressured his son into acting and that Sanjay had full freedom to choose his own path.
"I would never do that," Vijay affirmed during the conversation. "It is completely his interest. If he feels he needs my support, I will support him. They have full freedom to choose. I don't command them, saying they have to do this or that."
Vijay further shared that many directors had approached him regarding his son's film debut, but he had always left the decision to Sanjay. "I tell him people are asking, but at the end of the day, it is his choice. He told me, 'Please don't disturb me for a couple of years. I don't want this right now,'" he revealed.
Reflecting on his own father, S. A. Chandrasekhar, Vijay recalled their differences, especially after his father attempted to use Vijay's fan base to launch a political party without his consent. Vijay had distanced himself from the initiative, publicly clarifying that neither he nor his fan clubs had any involvement in the political move.
Vijay spoke about the role fathers play in families, using the metaphor of trees and roots. "When we see a beautiful tree, we admire the flowers but never notice the effort of the roots. Fathers are like that. They are the roots of every family," Vijay expressed, emphasizing that the understanding of a father's role comes only when one becomes a father themselves.
