Powerful 7.6-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Western Caribbean, Tsunami Warnings Issued and Lifted
A massive 7.6-magnitude earthquake shook the western Caribbean Sea on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 6:23 p.m. ET, sending shockwaves across the region. The epicenter was located approximately 130 miles south-southwest of George Town, Cayman Islands, at a depth of 6 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Tsunami Alerts Spark Concern
In the immediate aftermath, tsunami warnings were issued for the Cayman Islands, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and parts of Mexico, prompting authorities to urge coastal residents to move inland and seek higher ground. However, hours later, the alerts were lifted, as no significant tsunami waves were observed.
Hazard Management Cayman Islands confirmed that an "all clear" was issued for Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman, bringing relief to residents.

Minimal Impact, No Reported Injuries
Despite the earthquake’s intensity, no major damage or injuries have been reported. Experts suggest that the remote offshore location of the quake played a crucial role in minimizing its impact on populated areas.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, urging residents to stay informed and prepared for any potential aftershocks.
