BJP Sweeps Gujarat Local Polls, Congress and AAP Suffer Major Defeat
April 28, 2026 | Gujarat — BJP sweeps local body elections with massive wins across cities and panchayats. Congress and AAP trail far behind, highlighting BJP’s strong organisational dominance statewide

The Bharatiya Janata Party has delivered a commanding performance in the Gujarat local body elections, securing an overwhelming majority across municipal corporations, municipalities, and panchayats. The results highlight the party’s deep-rooted organisational strength across both urban and rural regions, while rivals like Indian National Congress and Aam Aadmi Party struggled to maintain relevance in most areas.

BJP Dominates Urban Strongholds

Across 15 municipal corporations with a total of 1,044 seats, BJP secured 856 seats, leaving Congress with just 77 and others with 12. Major cities such as Ahmedabad and Surat once again reinforced BJP’s dominance. In Ahmedabad, BJP won 158 out of 192 seats, while in Surat, it secured a massive 115 out of 120 seats, pushing AAP to just 4 seats and Congress to a single seat.

Similar trends were visible in other key cities. Rajkot, Vadodara, and Bhavnagar witnessed strong BJP victories, with the party winning 65, 69, and 44 seats respectively. In many regions, AAP failed to open its account, highlighting its limited expansion beyond select urban pockets.

Mid-sized cities and smaller civic bodies also reflected BJP’s stronghold. Places like Nadiad and Navsari saw near-total sweeps, while Porbandar and Morbi recorded complete victories for BJP. Even in areas where opposition parties managed to win a few seats, the gap remained significantly wide.

Rural Reach and Political Implications

The BJP’s dominance extended beyond cities into municipalities and panchayats. In 84 municipalities, the party secured 1,791 out of 2,030 seats. In district panchayats, it won 568 seats, while in taluka panchayats, it secured 2,397 seats, further cementing its influence at the grassroots level.

For Congress, the results indicate a continued decline, with scattered gains failing to translate into meaningful competition. AAP, which had shown promise in previous elections, particularly in Surat, witnessed a sharp drop in performance, raising questions about its long-term strategy in Gujarat.

The overall outcome sends a clear political message. BJP’s organisational network, voter connect, and consistent ground presence continue to outperform its rivals. Unless opposition parties restructure their approach and build stronger local engagement, this gap is likely to widen further in future elections.
