April 29, 2026 | Kolkata, West Bengal Election 2026 Controversy
Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday intensified the political temperature in West Bengal by accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party of attempting to rig the ongoing Assembly elections. Speaking during the crucial second and final phase of voting, she alleged that the electoral process was being compromised through intimidation tactics and undue interference by central forces.
The Chief Minister also made strong remarks against officials associated with the Election Commission of India, claiming that some observers were behaving like “terrorists.” According to her, security personnel had entered the homes of party workers and created an atmosphere of fear among voters. Mamata Banerjee made these statements during her visit to a local party functionary in Kolkata, highlighting what she described as instances of harassment and violence.
The controversy comes at a time when voting is underway in Bhabanipur, the constituency from which Mamata Banerjee is contesting, along with 141 other seats in the southern belt of the state. She claimed that central forces had conducted late-night operations at the residence of a party councillor, which led her to personally visit the location to assess the situation.
Emphasizing the importance of free and fair elections, Mamata Banerjee stated that voting should be treated as a democratic festival and not overshadowed by fear or violence. She further alleged that her party workers were being targeted but remained determined to stand their ground despite the challenges. With high voter turnout expected and political tensions running high, these allegations are likely to intensify the ongoing battle between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP as West Bengal heads toward the final results.
