Suvendu Adhikari to Be BJP's First West Bengal Chief Minister After Historic Win

In a historic moment for West Bengal politics, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has been announced as the state's next Chief Minister, marking the first time a BJP leader will head the government in the state. Union Home Minister Amit Shah made the official announcement, confirming Adhikari's position as the elected leader of the BJP legislature party in West Bengal.

This breakthrough comes after BJP’s remarkable victory in the state assembly elections, where it won 207 out of the 293 seats contested. With the Congress, VCK, CPI, and CPI(M) all backing TVK, the alliance led by Adhikari now reaches the magic number of 118 in the 294-member Assembly.

Amit Shah, addressing a BJP party meet in Bengal, expressed the significance of the victory, referencing the 100-year ideological journey of the party. He remarked on the party's growth from its roots, led by Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, to forming a government in Bengal.

Adhikari, who played a key role in the 2011 Nandigram movement and switched to BJP ahead of the 2021 assembly elections, is set to take the oath as the Chief Minister tomorrow at Kolkata's Brigade Parade Ground. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, BJP president Nitin Nabin, and several BJP state Chief Ministers are expected to attend the ceremony.

The announcement also comes after a tense political standoff, where Adhikari had been repeatedly blocked by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar in the attempt to stake his claim. Following Adhikari's victory in Bhabanipur, Mamata Banerjee’s former stronghold, and his retention of the Nandigram constituency, the political tides shifted dramatically in favor of BJP.

Adhikari’s elevation symbolizes a broader change in Bengal’s political landscape, once dominated by Mamata Banerjee’s TMC. His journey from being a prominent figure in TMC to leading BJP’s charge in the state demonstrates the evolving dynamics in Bengal politics, marking a historic moment for the saffron party’s presence in the state.
