Actor-politician Vijay moved closer to becoming the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after VCK and IUML officially extended support to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, helping the party cross the majority mark in the Assembly.
Tamil Nadu’s dramatic post-election political uncertainty finally moved towards a conclusion on Saturday, May 9, 2026, after the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) extended unconditional support to Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The development came after four days of intense political negotiations following the Assembly election results, where TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the state. With the support of VCK and IUML, Vijay now reportedly has the backing of 120 MLAs, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 118 required to form the government in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.
TVK had secured 108 seats in the elections, although the effective strength stands at 107 because Vijay is expected to vacate one of the two constituencies he won. Congress, which won five seats, was among the first parties to back TVK after ending its long-standing alliance with the DMK. The Left parties also extended support earlier with four MLAs. The addition of VCK’s two MLAs and IUML’s two MLAs has now strengthened Vijay’s position significantly in the race to form the next government in Tamil Nadu.
Political uncertainty had continued until Friday 8th May night after reports emerged that VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan was unhappy because Vijay allegedly sought support through WhatsApp messages instead of personally meeting him. At the same time, IUML leaders initially maintained that the party remained aligned with the DMK. However, negotiations resumed on 9th May Saturday morning after senior TVK leaders met both the VCK and IUML leadership, eventually securing their support.
While VCK announced unconditional backing to TVK, party leader Vanni Arasu stated that a decision on joining the government would be taken later. He also revealed that the party wants Thol Thirumavalavan to contest from the Assembly seat that Vijay is expected to vacate and eventually become Deputy Chief Minister. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar is expected to complete the constitutional process after formally verifying majority support before inviting Vijay to form the government.
