Sonarpur Attack Triggers Political Tension
TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly attacked during his visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas on Saturday, May 30, 2026. He had gone to meet the family of a TMC worker reportedly killed in post-poll violence when the situation turned tense. Reports said stones, eggs and slippers were allegedly hurled, and Abhishek later complained of pain in his neck, back and chest. He was taken to a private hospital in Kolkata for medical examination. The incident quickly became a major political flashpoint, with TMC blaming BJP workers, while the controversy drew wider attention to post-election tension in Bengal.
Mamata Raises Questions Over Hospital Treatment
Mamata Banerjee strongly reacted to the incident and claimed Abhishek “could have died” if he had not been wearing a helmet. She also alleged that pressure was placed on hospitals and doctors over his treatment and admission. According to reports, hospital officials said Abhishek was conscious and did not show serious physical injury signs apart from bruises, while Mamata questioned why he was kept under observation and advised medical tests if admission was not needed. The hospital row has now added another layer to the political fight, making the Sonarpur incident a major Bengal news story.
