BJP Steps Back from Andhra Rajya Sabha Seat Amid Annamalai Exit

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially relinquished its claim to a Rajya Sabha seat in Andhra Pradesh following the resignation of former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai. The change in the seat-sharing arrangement among NDA allies reallocates three of the four vacant Rajya Sabha seats to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and one seat to the Jana Sena Party (JSP). This revised formula was finalized after a high-level meeting in Amaravati on Thursday, June 4, 2026, attended by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan, and senior BJP officials.

Sources indicate that the original seat-sharing plan had proposed one seat each for BJP and JSP, with the remaining two allotted to the TDP. However, Annamalai’s resignation triggered reconsideration of this arrangement. The former IPS officer had earlier held a series of meetings in New Delhi with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, and BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santosh. During these discussions, Annamalai briefed the leadership on the political situation in Tamil Nadu and verbally conveyed his intention to step down from the party.

NDA Plans Public Meetings To Strengthen Alliance Coordination

As part of efforts to reinforce coordination among NDA partners in Andhra Pradesh, leaders announced three upcoming public meetings scheduled in Tirupati, Amaravati, and Visakhapatnam later this month. The BJP’s withdrawal from the Rajya Sabha seat and the subsequent reallocation underscore the significant ripple effect K Annamalai’s resignation has had on regional politics. Political analysts note that this move reflects both the dynamic nature of alliance politics in the state and the BJP’s strategy to maintain cohesion among its NDA partners while recalibrating its position following Annamalai’s exit.

The revised seat-sharing arrangement is expected to have implications for upcoming elections, as it strengthens the role of TDP and Jana Sena Party within the NDA coalition. By ceding its claim to a seat in Andhra Pradesh, BJP signals a pragmatic approach to alliance management while adjusting to shifting political realities in southern India. Observers suggest that K Annamalai’s departure continues to reverberate across state and national political landscapes, highlighting how individual leadership changes can influence broader electoral strategies.
