Tamil Anthem First In Assembly Sparks Debate Over Protocol Order

Tamil Anthem First In Assembly Sparks Debate Over Protocol Order

The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday 18-06, 2026 adhered to its long-standing tradition by beginning proceedings with the rendition of the Tamil invocation song, Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu, followed by the National Anthem at the end of the session. The sequence reflects a practice followed in the state for several decades during official government functions.

The decision comes in the backdrop of renewed political attention on anthem protocols, which had earlier triggered controversy during the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.

Previous Controversy Over Anthem Sequence

The issue of anthem order had sparked a political row after the swearing-in ceremony on May 10, where the sequence of songs deviated from the traditional Tamil Nadu format. That event led to widespread debate over protocol, cultural representation, and constitutional conventions followed in state functions.

During Thursday’s Assembly proceedings, however, officials reverted to the conventional order, placing Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu at the beginning and the National Anthem at the conclusion, aligning with established state practice.

Political Reactions And Opposition Criticism

The earlier deviation had drawn criticism from multiple political parties, including opposition groups and allies. Concerns were raised about whether the change in sequence aligned with long-standing state traditions.

Some leaders argued that Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu should retain its primary position in state events, while others questioned the influence of central directives in determining ceremonial protocols within Tamil Nadu.

Clarifications And Centre-State Coordination Debate

Following the controversy, TVK representatives clarified that the party had raised objections regarding the altered sequence and stated that the traditional format should remain unchanged in state functions. The discussion also highlighted the role of administrative directives from central authorities and Raj Bhavan in determining protocol arrangements.

The debate has once again brought attention to the balance between state traditions and national conventions, especially in politically sensitive ceremonial practices.
