At least 13 people were killed and five others injured when a pickup truck carrying wedding guests was struck by two trucks on Java’s northern coastal highway. The Indonesia highway crash occurred near Kiajaran Kulon village in Indramayu regency on Sunday afternoon, July 12.
The passengers were returning home after attending a wedding ceremony in Parean village. Local traffic police said the powerful collision crushed the pickup and threw several occupants onto the highway. The injured victims were taken to nearby hospitals, while authorities opened an investigation into the cause of the accident.
Wedding guest crash near Kiajaran Kulon
Local traffic police chief Undang Syarif Hidayat said the pickup truck was travelling through Indramayu with guests returning from the wedding function.
The vehicle reportedly attempted to make a U-turn on the busy highway. At that moment, a wing-box truck travelling in the same direction struck the pickup from behind.
The force of the first impact pushed the pickup into the opposite lane, where another truck collided with it. The smaller vehicle was crushed between the two larger trucks, causing passengers to be thrown from the pickup onto the road.
Information provided by Hidayat and reported by the Associated Press indicated that more than a dozen people were hurled onto the highway following the three-truck collision.
Indramayu crash kills 13 people
Authorities confirmed that at least 13 people died in the accident. Five others suffered injuries and were admitted to hospitals for treatment.
Officials had not immediately released the names of all the victims or detailed information about the condition of the injured passengers. Emergency workers and local residents helped move victims away from the damaged vehicles while police controlled traffic around the crash site.
The collision disrupted movement along the northern coastal highway, an important transport route that carries large numbers of passenger vehicles and commercial trucks across Java.
Police have not announced whether any of the drivers involved have been arrested or formally charged. Investigators are expected to determine whether traffic violations or unsafe driving contributed to the deaths.
Java truck collision under investigation
Police have begun examining the sequence of events that led to the Java truck collision. The pickup’s reported U-turn will form a major part of the investigation because the manoeuvre placed the vehicle in the path of the wing-box truck.
Investigators may inspect the damaged vehicles, question the drivers and witnesses, and review any surveillance footage available from nearby businesses or highway cameras.
They are also expected to examine whether excessive speed, poor visibility, mechanical failure or road conditions played a role. Authorities have not yet issued an official final cause for the crash.
The investigation will also consider whether the pickup was carrying more passengers than permitted and whether those travelling in the rear cargo area had adequate protection.
Pickup crash raises road safety concerns
The wedding tragedy has drawn attention to the dangers of transporting groups of passengers in pickup trucks. Cargo areas generally lack seat belts, protective enclosures and other safety features found in passenger vehicles.
During a high-speed collision, people riding in an open pickup area can easily be thrown onto the road. This greatly increases the likelihood of fatal head injuries, crushing injuries and trauma from other moving vehicles.
The Indramayu accident also highlights the risks created when vehicles attempt U-turns on highways carrying fast-moving freight traffic. Drivers must confirm that they have enough distance and visibility before crossing active lanes.
Authorities are continuing their investigation and are expected to release further findings after examining evidence from the scene. The current death toll remains 13, while five injured survivors continue receiving medical care.
