Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor has scored a remarkable victory in the Bankipur Assembly by-election, defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party in one of its strongest urban constituencies in Bihar.
According to the Election Commission of India’s final figures, Kishor secured 64,151 votes, representing 49.23 per cent of the total votes counted. BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar finished second with 44,827 votes and a 34.4 per cent vote share. Kishor’s final winning margin stood at 19,324 votes.
Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate Rekha Kumari finished a distant third after receiving 14,273 votes, or 10.95 per cent. The numbers show that the contest ultimately developed into a direct battle between Kishor and the BJP candidate, with the RJD unable to seriously challenge the two leading contenders.
Prashant Kishor Ends BJP’s Three-Decade Dominance
The victory carries considerable symbolic importance because Bankipur had been regarded as a BJP fortress. Political reports described the result as ending a three-decade run that included eight consecutive BJP victories in the constituency and its earlier electoral configuration since 1995.
The seat was previously represented by BJP national president Nitin Nabin. He resigned as a Bihar MLA while moving to the Rajya Sabha and taking on a larger role in national politics, creating the vacancy that led to the by-election.
The scale of the result is particularly striking because the BJP had comfortably retained Bankipur in the 2025 Bihar Assembly election. Kishor’s ability to overturn that dominance in his first direct electoral contest has transformed the bypoll into a major political talking point beyond Patna.
Prashant Kishor Gives Jan Suraaj Its First Seat
The Bankipur result marks Prashant Kishor’s transition from political strategist to elected representative. After years of designing election campaigns for different political parties, he will now enter the Bihar Legislative Assembly as an MLA.
The victory is equally significant for the Jan Suraaj Party, which failed to secure a seat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly election. Bankipur has now delivered the party’s first major electoral breakthrough and established its presence in the Assembly.
Kishor had deliberately selected Bankipur instead of searching for a safer constituency. During the campaign, he presented the contest as a test of whether voters would support an agenda centred on employment, education, migration and development over established party loyalties.
Prashant Kishor Victory Sends Warning To BJP And RJD
For the BJP, losing a constituency closely associated with its national president represents a serious setback. Party leaders have accepted the result and indicated that they will review why the organisation failed to retain its traditional urban support base.
The result also presents a challenge for the RJD, whose candidate remained far behind both Jan Suraaj and the BJP. Kishor’s emergence as a direct electoral competitor could complicate Bihar’s political landscape by creating a third centre of opposition and development-focused politics.
A single by-election cannot determine the direction of the entire state, but the Bankipur verdict has given Kishor political momentum and organisational credibility. The strategist who once helped other leaders win elections has now captured a seat himself—and done so by defeating the BJP in one of its most protected fortresses.
