A late-night house party in southeast Houston turned deadly early Sunday morning, leaving at least one person dead and several others critically injured in a mass shooting incident. Authorities from the Houston Police Department (HPD) responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 12:50 a.m. on the 6000 block of Cherry Hill, according to HPD Assistant Chief Patricia Cantu. Cantu stated during a press briefing that multiple 911 calls alerted law enforcement to the scene, where officers arrived to find a chaotic and grim situation. Multiple victims were found shot in various locations in and around the property. The party, which was reportedly a private family gathering, escalated into tragedy when an uninvited guest was asked to leave.
According to preliminary information shared by HPD, the uninvited individual is believed to have returned fire after being confronted and asked to leave. The altercation escalated quickly, resulting in an exchange of gunfire, with some partygoers allegedly firing back in self-defense or panic. The Houston Fire Department was dispatched shortly after and confirmed that at least one person had died from their injuries at the scene. Several other victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, with some reportedly in critical condition and undergoing surgery. Authorities also noted that a few victims may have transported themselves to medical facilities without waiting for emergency services.
“This was a family party, and it turned into a tragedy,” Assistant Chief Cantu said. “An uninvited guest arrived, was asked to leave, and then started shooting. Others responded. It is unclear who all fired weapons at this time.” As of Sunday morning, multiple individuals were detained, but it remains unclear whether the actual shooting suspect is in custody. Cantu emphasized that the investigation is still in the early stages, and police are working to interview witnesses, gather evidence, and review any available video footage from the area.
HPD investigators remained at the scene throughout the morning, interviewing attendees and canvassing the neighborhood for any surveillance footage that might provide additional insights into the sequence of events. The names of the victims have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and contact HPD’s homicide division or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
This incident marks another addition to a growing list of shootings tied to large gatherings in Texas, reigniting concerns about gun violence and public safety during private events. While the motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, police believe the suspect was not known to all attendees and was not welcomed at the gathering. Law enforcement is asking the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious behavior or information related to the Cherry Hill incident. Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
