Yamuna Water Level Reaches 207.41 Metres in Delhi, Third-Highest Ever Recorded Amidst Major Flooding
Delhi is facing some of its worst flooding in recent memory as the water level of the Yamuna river surged to 207.41 metres, the third-highest level ever recorded. The flooding has impacted large parts of the riverbank, including residential and commercial areas, with authorities now working to manage the growing crisis.
As of 9 PM today, the rising water has inundated several key areas, including Yamuna Bazar, Geeta Colony, Majnu Ka Tila, Kashmiri Gate, Garhi Mandu, and Mayur Vihar. These areas, which host a mix of both residential and commercial buildings, have seen severe waterlogging and disruption. Over 14,000 people have been evacuated, and rescue operations are still ongoing, with relief camps set up in ITO, Mayur Vihar, and Geeta Colony.
The flooding has caused significant disruptions to traffic, with parts of the Outer Ring Road, including the road from ITO towards Ring Road, becoming impassable due to the floodwater. Additionally, key infrastructure like the Vasudev Ghat, Monastery Market, and the Old Delhi Railway Bridge have been closed to the public.
One of the most concerning developments is that floodwater has started entering the Nigambodh Ghat, Delhi's oldest and busiest cremation ground. With a capacity of 42 cremation platforms, this site plays a critical role in performing last rites for the people of Delhi. While operations are still ongoing, officials have warned that if the water level rises further, they may have to halt activities temporarily. The caretaker at Nigambodh Ghat confirmed that while the pyres have not yet been reached by the water, the number of cremations has been reduced due to the rising waters.
The surge in the water level has been attributed to the high volume of water being released every hour from the Wazirabad and Hathnikund barrages. Authorities are forecasting that the water level may continue to rise, further exacerbating the situation across the affected regions. As rescue operations continue and more people are evacuated, the city is bracing for the possibility of more areas being submerged. The situation remains critical, and further updates are expected as authorities work to control the impact of the floodwaters.
