A tragic incident from Uttar Pradesh has reignited concerns over the health risks linked to excessive online gaming after a 22-year-old youth allegedly died from a brain haemorrhage triggered while playing a game on his mobile phone. The incident has once again brought the spotlight on gaming addiction and its potential impact on both physical and mental health, especially among young adults.
The deceased, identified as Mohammad Kaif, was a resident of the Khairnagar area of Meerut. According to local reports, Kaif was at his father’s office when the incident occurred. He was reportedly playing an online game on his phone when he suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness. Those present at the office immediately rushed him to a nearby nursing home, from where he was later referred to Safdarjung Hospital for advanced treatment.
Doctors suspect that a sudden spike in blood pressure led to a brain haemorrhage. Kaif, who worked with his father Mohammad Farooq, a property dealer, had a known medical history of hypertension. Family members revealed that nearly ten years ago, he had experienced dangerously high blood pressure levels and had since been on regular medication and treatment. Despite medical supervision, the sudden physiological stress is believed to have worsened his condition.
Family members said Kaif spent long hours on his mobile phone, not only playing online games but also creating reels for social media platforms. They claimed repeated attempts were made to reduce his screen time, but their concerns were often ignored. Local reports suggest that the intensity and emotional involvement during gaming sessions may have contributed to heightened stress levels, potentially triggering the fatal episode.
This incident comes close on the heels of other distressing cases linked to online gaming in Uttar Pradesh. Less than a week earlier, three minor sisters in Ghaziabad allegedly died by suicide after disputes related to online gaming, underscoring a troubling pattern emerging across the region. Experts warn that prolonged gaming, especially among individuals with pre-existing health conditions, can act as a serious risk factor due to stress, sleep deprivation, and elevated blood pressure.
As online gaming continues to grow rapidly in India, incidents like this have intensified calls for greater awareness, parental supervision, and medical caution. Health professionals stress the need for moderation, regular health check-ups, and early intervention to prevent such tragic outcomes.
