Over the decades, support for the holiday grew. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson publicly supported it. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge encouraged states to observe the day. Finally, in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a proclamation declaring the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. It became a permanent national observance in 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed it into law.
