Diogo Jota Dies in Car Accident, Just 2 Weeks After Wedding

In a heartbreaking tragedy, Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota has reportedly died in a car crash in Spain, just two weeks after his wedding. The 28-year-old forward, who had recently helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League, was involved in an accident on the A-52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria in the Zamora region of northwestern Spain. Jota's brother, Andre Filipe, a 26-year-old professional footballer, was reportedly in the car with him and also lost his life in the incident.

According to reports from Spanish outlets Marca and BBC, the crash occurred when the Lamborghini the brothers were traveling in suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle. The car then veered off the road and caught fire, resulting in both brothers losing their lives at the scene. Emergency services from the Zamora Provincial Council quickly responded to the fire, which spread to nearby vegetation.

This devastating accident occurred just ten days after Diogo Jota's wedding to his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, in Porto on June 22. The wedding had been a joyous occasion, with photos showing the couple celebrating with their three children. Jota's untimely death has left fans and the football world in shock.

Jota began his career with Paos de Ferreira in Portugal before moving to Atlético Madrid in 2016. He went on to play for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, eventually earning a move to Liverpool, where he became a key player. At Liverpool, he won both the FA Cup and League Cup, and most recently, he helped the team secure the Premier League title in the 2024-25 season.

Internationally, Jota was a vital member of the Portugal squad, featuring in major tournaments like Euro 2024 and contributing to Portugal’s victory in the UEFA Nations League earlier this year. He played during extra time in the final against Spain. As of now, there has been no official statement from Liverpool FC or the Portuguese Football Federation. Fans and the football world await further updates as the loss of this talented player reverberates across the globe.
