Amidst growing speculation, the buzz around the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood intensified on August 4, 2025, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah separately met President Droupadi Murmu. The meetings, which have come just days before the anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, have sparked rumors that the government might announce the restoration of J&K's statehood. J&K was bifurcated into two Union Territories Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh under the J&K Reorganisation Act in 2019, dissolving the region’s legislature and shifting administrative control to the Centre.
The speculation gained momentum after the 2024 assembly elections were conducted in J&K, and the demand for statehood was pushed by major political figures like Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the Congress party. The BJP-led government, however, has not provided a definitive timeline for the restoration of statehood. In December 2023, the Supreme Court, while upholding the abrogation of Article 370, urged the government to restore J&K's statehood "at the earliest."
Meanwhile, sources reveal that Amit Shah has also held talks with several J&K leaders, including BJP officials, to discuss the future political trajectory of the region. On August 3, Shah met with Imran Raza Ansari, president of the All J&K Shia Association, to discuss ground realities in the Union Territory. The proximity of these meetings to the anniversary of Article 370’s abrogation on August 5 adds further weight to the rumors.
Political experts and social media discussions have raised the possibility of J&K being granted statehood once again, though there is also talk of potential reorganization, with some speculating that Jammu and Kashmir might be separated into two distinct states. These discussions have generated mixed reactions from political leaders and citizens alike, with some expressing concerns that such a move could disrupt the fragile peace established in the region since the abrogation of Article 370.
For now, it remains unclear whether the government will proceed with the restoration of statehood in the near future or take a more cautious approach, as some experts believe that the region should be given more time to stabilize before any significant political decisions are made. The next few days could prove critical in shaping the future of Jammu and Kashmir’s governance and political landscape.
