Pulivendula By-election: A Major Test for YCP’s Stronghold

The Pulivendula ZPTC by-election has become a highly contentious issue for the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YCP), with the outcome carrying significant implications for its dominance in the region. Known for its favoring of ruling parties in local elections, the battle for this by-election is anything but easy.

The election was delayed for almost two years due to the untimely death of Maheshwar Reddy, the sitting ZPTC member from YCP. But now, the by-election is finally set to take place, making it one of the most closely watched political events in Andhra Pradesh. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has fielded Latha Pretty, the wife of BTech Ravi, as their candidate. Latha is backed by influential local figures, including Madhavi, the MLA from Pulivendula, and Jammalamadugu MLA Adi Narayana Reddy of the BJP. Both have been campaigning vigorously to secure her victory.

On the other hand, YCP is pulling out all stops, with MP Avinash Reddy leading the charge. He made headlines recently by requesting the opposition parties to leave the seat uncontested out of humanitarian concern for the YCP candidate, but his plea was met with resistance. The election's high stakes have caused a shift in local dynamics, with many families that were once loyal to YCP now switching sides to support TDP.

This by-election holds immense political weight for YCP, especially since Pulivendula has long been a stronghold for the YS family, making it a crucial battleground for YCP’s survival in the region. A loss in Pulivendula would not only be a massive blow to the party but also to the credibility of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, who has enjoyed unwavering support from his home turf for years.

However, facing a unified opposition led by TDP, BJP, and an energized NDA alliance, YCP is finding itself under immense pressure. With the political climate more volatile than ever, it remains to be seen whether Jagan still commands the same level of affection and loyalty in Pulivendula as in the past. The people of Pulivendula will make a crucial decision in the coming days, one that could have far-reaching consequences for the future of the YCP, TDP, and Andhra Pradesh's political landscape.
