Jaishankar meets US envoy Sergio Gor ahead of Washington visit on critical minerals

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday held talks with United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor in New Delhi, days ahead of his scheduled visit to Washington, D.C., for a high-level engagement on critical minerals. The meeting focused on multiple aspects of the India-US relationship, reflecting the breadth and depth of cooperation between the two countries across strategic, economic and defence domains.

Following the meeting, Jaishankar said the discussions covered the many dimensions of the bilateral partnership and expressed confidence that the new ambassador would play a constructive role in further strengthening ties. In a message shared on social media, the minister welcomed Gor and underlined his expectation that the envoy would contribute meaningfully to advancing India-US relations at a time of growing global and regional challenges.

Ambassador Gor also described the interaction as a substantive exchange, noting that the talks spanned a wide range of shared priorities. According to the envoy, discussions included defence cooperation, trade relations, critical minerals and broader efforts aimed at advancing common strategic interests. He indicated that both sides were aligned on sustaining momentum in bilateral engagement and hinted at further developments in the near future.

Jaishankar is set to travel to the United States early next week to participate in the inaugural Critical Minerals Ministerial, a meeting that underscores the increasing importance both countries place on securing resilient and diversified supply chains. The ministerial, hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, will be held at the State Department on February 4 and is expected to bring together senior officials from key partner nations to address cooperation in sourcing, processing and technology related to critical minerals.

Ambassador Gor assumed office as the 27th US Ambassador to India on January 12. Prior to his posting in New Delhi, he held several senior positions in Washington, including serving as Assistant to the President and Director of Presidential Personnel at the White House. In that role, he was responsible for overseeing high-level appointments and administrative processes, experience that officials believe will inform his diplomatic engagement in India.

In recent remarks, Gor has highlighted the strength of defence cooperation between the two countries, pointing to a 10-year defence pact signed last year that is expected to significantly deepen the strategic partnership. He has noted that joint military exercises will continue and that additional defence-related transactions are underway, even as trade-related differences occasionally test the broader relationship.

The ambassador recently attended India’s Republic Day parade for the first time, calling the experience a privilege and a reflection of the country’s constitutional values and democratic traditions. He also drew attention to the participation of US-manufactured aircraft in the ceremonial flypast, describing it as a visible symbol of the depth and resilience of the India-US strategic partnership.

The meeting between Jaishankar and Gor comes amid sustained efforts by both governments to expand cooperation in emerging areas while managing differences through dialogue. With high-level exchanges continuing and new mechanisms such as the critical minerals ministerial taking shape, officials on both sides have emphasized the long-term significance of the India-US partnership in addressing shared global and regional priorities.
