Dallas police receive major funding boost for 2026 World Cup security

The Dallas Police Department is preparing for a significant surge in international visitors as the city gears up to host multiple matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, supported by a substantial increase in federal funding aimed at strengthening security operations. City officials confirmed that Dallas has been awarded $51.5 million in federal assistance, with a large portion allocated directly to policing and safety measures.

Police Chief David Comeaux said the department will receive $22 million from the grant, along with an additional $1.3 million earmarked for equipment upgrades and a separate $10 million dedicated to drone mitigation technology. The funding is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring public safety across key locations that will host World Cup-related activities.

Authorities plan to use most of the funds to support staffing requirements, including covering overtime costs and deploying additional personnel throughout the tournament period. The remaining funds will be invested in enhancing operational capabilities, including installing new surveillance cameras, acquiring portable anti-ramming barricades, and leasing vehicles and utility equipment to manage large crowds effectively.

Officials emphasized that preparations are already underway, although some operational details remain flexible due to uncertainties surrounding visitor turnout and fan activities across the city. Deputy Chief Tina Schultz noted that staffing plans will incorporate both on-duty officers and additional overtime resources, ensuring adequate coverage during high-demand periods such as knockout matches and large public gatherings.

Security planning also extends beyond stadium operations. Key venues such as AT&T Stadium, the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, and Fair Park are expected to draw significant crowds, along with surrounding hotels, restaurants, and entertainment areas. Authorities are coordinating closely with local businesses and community stakeholders to anticipate potential challenges and enhance preparedness.

Despite uncertainties, police leadership expressed confidence in their readiness to manage the scale of the event. Officials highlighted that proactive planning, combined with federal support, will allow the department to adapt quickly to evolving situations and maintain a secure environment for residents and visitors alike.
