The 2026 Masters Tournament officially began at Augusta National Golf Club with a ceremonial tradition that continues to define the event’s legacy. Golf legends Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson once again served as honorary starters, striking the opening tee shots beneath clear skies in Augusta.
Player, 90, opened the ceremony with a drive down the center of the fairway, finishing with his signature high leg kick. Nicklaus, 86, followed with a lighthearted warning to spectators before hitting a low hook that veered toward the gallery but safely cleared those nearby. Watson, 76, completed the trio with a steady drive down the middle, officially signaling the start of the tournament.
The honorary starter tradition dates back to 1963 and remains one of the most celebrated moments at the Masters. Over the decades, figures such as Arnold Palmer and Sam Snead have taken part, contributing to the event’s enduring heritage.
Nicklaus acknowledged concerns about his ability to continue participating following recent health issues but expressed hope to remain part of the ceremony. As the trio continues its role, questions remain about how long the tradition will feature these iconic figures and who may follow in their footsteps.
The opening ceremony once again highlighted the Masters’ blend of history and competition, setting the tone for another week at Augusta.
