India Argentina hockey clash starts badly

India entered Monday’s (24 Aug 2026) Pool E match needing a big victory to keep their semifinal hopes alive, but Argentina took control almost immediately at the Wagener Stadium.

Joaquin Toscani opened the scoring inside the first minute before Nicolas della Torre converted a penalty corner in the sixth minute to make it 2-0. India responded through Sukhjeet Singh in the 10th minute, reducing the deficit and briefly reviving hopes of a comeback.

Hockey World Cup campaign moves to classification

Hockey India confirmed that the defeat removed India from semifinal contention and that the team will now play for seventh and eighth position.

The classification match still offers India a chance to finish the tournament positively, but attention will quickly turn toward what went wrong defensively and how the squad responds ahead of its next major assignments.

The Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya will become an important target for Fulton and his players, with selection, defensive structure and penalty-corner efficiency likely to come under close review.

India’s 3-5 loss should not be viewed only through the final score. The side showed attacking quality and late resilience, but allowing Argentina to build an early advantage made an already difficult qualification equation almost impossible.

For India, the larger challenge remains converting strong performances at other major competitions into World Cup consistency. Fifty-one years after the 1975 triumph, that wait continues.
